Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) has entered into a strategic partnership with DNV to strengthen India’s maritime and shipbuilding ecosystem, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to emerge as a globally competitive shipbuilding hub.
Collaboration Framework
The partnership will concentrate on ship classification standards, maritime technology integration, green shipping solutions, and implementation of international best practices for commercial and defence shipbuilding. The collaboration aligns directly with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, both designed to position India among the world’s leading maritime economies.
Strategic Timing
The partnership comes as India aggressively expands its shipbuilding capabilities through the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS), Maritime Development Fund (MDF), and the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy. The government has set an ambitious target to achieve a top-five global ranking in shipbuilding by 2047, requiring an estimated investment of nearly ₹75-80 lakh crore to realize its maritime infrastructure vision.
Global Competitiveness
Partnerships between Indian shipyards and global classification societies like DNV are becoming increasingly critical as India seeks to compete with established shipbuilding nations including China, South Korea, and Japan. International certification, safety compliance, and sustainability standards are recognized as essential factors for attracting export orders and foreign maritime investment.
The collaboration represents a strategic effort to translate India’s policy ambitions into global credibility, positioning the nation for its shipbuilding moment on the international stage.
