PowerCell, the Swedish fuel cell specialist, has landed a contract worth just over SEK 40m ($4.25m) to equip two pioneering hydrogen-powered bulk carriers with zero-emission propulsion systems. Under the deal, PowerCell will deliver 14 of its Marine System 225 units between 2026 and 2027, providing a combined output of more than 3 MW. Each vessel will be fitted with seven systems, allowing them to run entirely on renewable hydrogen instead of fossil fuels.
The ships are being developed by GMI Rederi and are scheduled to enter service in 2027, becoming the first bulk carriers in the world to operate on hydrogen power. German integrator eCap Marine will oversee engineering, system integration, and certification of the hydrogen technology.
