Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port received first ever domestic automobile rake at GCD yard siding in Kolkata. This strategic initiative is part of the Port’s efforts to monetize its underutilized assets along with facilitating Ease of Doing Business to trade fraternity.

The first auto rake was brought by Joshi Konoike Transport and Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. from Farukh Nagar, Gurgaon and reached Kolkata in approximately 48 hours. The specialized BCACBM rake contained 270 cars which were kept in the storage yard and then distributed to the local dealers within the radius of 10 kilometers.

The port plans to strategically develop its underutilized railway infrastructure by providing a reliable terminal facility for domestic cargo (automobile, containers etc.) movement by rail. Such movements will not only yield additional returns to the port but also provide economic value to businesses by facilitating reduced road congestion, lower logistics cost and faster delivery.
