Tokyo Port container traffic up 6.5% in first half of 2025

Tokyo Port handled 2.42 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in the first half of 2025, an increase of 6.5% compared with the same period of the previous year, according to preliminary port statistics released for the period from January to June 2025.  

Foreign trade cargo volume showed mixed trends. Exports decreased due to lower volumes with the United States and Taiwan, reaching 94.8% of the previous year’s level. Imports increased, mainly from China and Vietnam, to 105.4% year on year.

The combined export and import total stood at 102.8% compared with the same period in 2024.  The number of foreign trade containers handled, including loaded and empty units, rose to 2.12 million TEU, representing 105.0% of the previous year’s figure. Domestic trade containers increased by 18.3% to 300,000 TEU.

Overall, the total number of foreign and domestic trade containers reached 2.42 million TEU, or 106.5% of the level recorded a year earlier.  

Domestic cargo volume rose slightly to 100.6% year on year. Outbound shipments of combined goods and heavy oil increased, while inbound cargoes of gravel, sand, and cement declined.  

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which oversees Tokyo Port operations, noted that the figures are preliminary and subject to revision.
