The upcoming transhipment facility at Galathea Bay and development of regional waterways will be the game changer in the future for Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. According to the Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Mr. Sanjeev Ranjan, the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port has taken up the Galathea Bay project in Great Nicobar Island at a very nascent stage. The Transhipment at Galathea Bay will increase regional connectivity on the eastern water grid with Bangladesh, Myanmar and other ports on the east coast. So far, many of the major ports are dependent on foreign transhipment hubs due to their locational and infrastructural superiority that attracts main line operators. The central government under the Island Development Programme scheme, has identified some selective islands for development of transhipment operations. The government is contemplating to create an International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) in Great Nicobar Islands. From a logistical and economic point of view it is a strong prerogative that transhipment facilities should be developed within the Indian waters, so that India can develop a hub and spoke model to attract and distribute transhipment traffic in Southeast Asia.
