The Union Government has named senior IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) officer Vivek Chaturvedi as the next Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). His appointment, cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and notified by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), places him at the helm of India’s top authority for indirect tax administration and policy.
A 1990-batch officer, Chaturvedi succeeds Sanjay Kumar Agarwal of the 1988 batch, who completed his term on November 28, 2025. Chaturvedi joined the CBIC board earlier this year as a member after serving as Principal Director General of Vigilance and Chief Vigilance Officer. In that role, he was responsible for steering vigilance oversight across Customs and GST structures, with a focus on enhancing integrity systems, tightening internal controls and promoting greater accountability.
His appointment follows the exit of Vivek Ranjan, Member (Tax Policy & Legal), who retired on August 31, 2025. With over 30 years of experience spanning vigilance functions, compliance management and indirect tax operations, Chaturvedi is expected to provide continuity in policy direction and bolster enforcement as the CBIC adapts to new trade realities and the evolving GST regime.
