Adani Group’s Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has crossed the 2 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container throughput milestone in approximately 18 months of operations, marking an exceptional achievement for India’s newest deep-water transshipment hub.

Rapid Growth Trajectory

The port had previously handled 1 million TEUs in just nine months by August 2025, surpassing industry expectations and strengthening India’s maritime presence. By January 2026, the port had handled 1.57 million TEUs after about one year of operations, welcoming 740 vessels.

The facility recorded its highest-ever monthly throughput of 123,092 TEUs in January 2026, while handling a record 62 vessels during the month. It also achieved a Gross Crane Rate of 30.12 container moves per hour, a performance benchmark considered globally competitive.

Global Ranking

Vizhinjam International Seaport has risen to the 83rd position globally in container handling as of February 2026, reflecting the rapid scale-up of India’s newest deep-water transshipment hub. The port sustained strong performance in February 2026, handling significant container and bulk volumes as it ramps up toward full capacity.

Phase 2 Expansion

The Kerala government and Adani Ports announced Phase 2 expansion plans in January 2026, with a ₹16,000-crore investment to scale capacity from 1 million to 5.7 million TEUs. The expansion is focused on scale and automation, designed for faster operations with enhanced EXIM and rail connectivity.
