Vizhinjam International Seaport has become the fastest port in India to cross the 1-million-TEU milestone, achieving the feat within just 10 months of operations. The deep-water port—developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) in partnership with the Kerala Government—handled 1.32 million TEUs in its debut year.

Since opening on 3 December 2024, Vizhinjam has handled 615 vessel calls, rapidly becoming a preferred stop for the world’s biggest container ships. The port received 41 ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) over 399 meters in length, the highest number handled by any Indian port. It also managed 154 vessels above 300 meters and 45 ships with drafts exceeding 16 meters, underscoring its natural depth advantage.

Among its standout achievements, Vizhinjam handled MSC Verona with a 17.1-meter arrival draft—the deepest-draft vessel ever managed in South Asia—and welcomed MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship. The port also recorded its highest single-vessel throughput of 10,576 TEUs on MSC Paloma and posted a peak Gross Crane Rate of 28.52 in October.

India’s first semi-automated container terminal, Vizhinjam is redefining operational standards with advanced technologies, including a Made-in-India Vehicle Traffic Management System that streamlines landside movements. The port has also become the first in the country to deploy women operators for automated cranes, marking a major step forward in maritime gender inclusion.

Strategically located near key East–West shipping lanes, Vizhinjam is emerging as India’s leading deep-water transshipment hub. Its ability to handle the world’s largest vessels is strengthening the nation’s role in global maritime trade.

With a record-setting first year, Vizhinjam has cemented its position as a new force in international shipping—boosting India’s logistics competitiveness and opening fresh opportunities for economic growth.
