Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport has emerged as one of India’s most dynamic maritime gateways, setting multiple national records in the 10 months since its commercial operations began in December last year, State Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan announced.

Developed and operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), Vizhinjam has exceeded expectations on both scale and capability, underscoring its role as a strategic deep-water hub on India’s southern coastline.

500th vessel milestone

In a symbolic achievement, the port welcomed its 500th vessel this week—the MSC Verona, the deepest-draft container ship ever to call at an Indian harbour. The vessel has a draft of 17.1 metres, demonstrating Vizhinjam’s ability to handle the new generation of ultra-large container ships that dominate global trade lanes.

According to APSEZ, out of the 500 vessels handled so far, 28 were Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs)—the highest number ever recorded at a single Indian port. The rapid growth reflects Vizhinjam’s unique natural advantages and its appeal to global carriers seeking faster turnaround and deep-water access.

Cargo performance exceeds forecasts

In its first 10 months of operations, Vizhinjam has already handled 1.1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), surpassing its initial annual capacity forecast. This performance places the port among the fastest-growing container terminals in the country and highlights its potential to reshape India’s transshipment landscape.

Officials note that Vizhinjam’s natural depth of 18–20 metres, coupled with minimal littoral drift, makes it ideally suited to accommodate the world’s largest container vessels with minimal dredging requirements—an advantage unmatched by most other Indian ports.

Emerging transshipment hub

“Vizhinjam’s capabilities are rapidly transforming it into India’s premier deep-water transshipment hub,” APSEZ said in a statement. “The port is strengthening India’s footprint on major global trade routes, while providing seamless connectivity to international shipping networks.”

Industry experts believe that Vizhinjam is uniquely positioned to reduce India’s reliance on foreign hubs such as Colombo and Singapore for transshipment cargo. By attracting mainline vessels directly, it can shorten transit times, lower logistics costs, and boost the competitiveness of Indian exports.

Strategic importance

Located close to international east–west shipping lanes, Vizhinjam provides natural advantages that few ports in the region can match. Its ability to berth ULCVs positions it as a game-changer for India’s maritime sector, while complementing existing container hubs along the western and eastern coasts.

Minister Vasavan said the port’s performance within such a short span is proof of its strategic significance not just for Kerala but for the nation’s shipping and trade ambitions. “Vizhinjam is already setting benchmarks in operational efficiency and vessel handling, and it is poised to play a central role in India’s maritime future,” he said.

Outlook

As Vizhinjam continues to scale up, its operators are focusing on enhancing connectivity and building complementary logistics infrastructure, including free trade zones and multimodal links. With sustained growth, the port is expected to evolve into a major gateway for global trade, reinforcing India’s position in the international shipping industry.
