Marine technology company Wartsila has launched an upgraded FuelFlex Injection Control Unit (ICU) solution. The solution will meet the requirements of operating the RT-flex type two-stroke diesel engines on residual and low-viscosity marine fuels. The solution will help the rising use of low-sulphur-content fuels to meet the sulphur emission regulations.

The solution by Wartsila can be retrofitted on vessels with Wartsila RT-flex96C-B and RT-flex84T-D two-stroke engines. ICUs release a predetermined amount of fuel into the cylinder at intervals, which ensures that there is effective combustion at any engine load.

However, fuel metering and injection timing accuracy can be hampered due to the leakages in the piston and valves, while the fuel viscosity, pressure differential and clearances affect the leakage amount.
The upgraded ICU is expected to address the leakage issues.

The new FuelFlex ICU is designed with more durable materials along with other improvement features that offer resistance against leakage and maintain component’s designed service life expectancy.

Wartsila Marine 2-Stroke and Specialised Services product manager Jung Yong Park said: “The latest FuelFlex ICU is a retrofit solution for customers that will increase both the reliability and environmental sustainability of their two-stroke engines. “It also enables more flexible onboard maintenance of the unit and the validation tests carried out have been very successful.”
