To help ease the traffic burden on the Mandovi bridge, construction has begun at Vijay Marine Services in Loutolim on two larger, twin-screw ferry boats tailored for the Panaji–Betim route. Engineered for speed and capacity, these ferries aim to provide a faster and more efficient river-crossing option, offering commuters an attractive alternative to road travel and helping alleviate vehicular congestion in the area.

Each of the two high-capacity ferries under construction will accommodate up to eight cars or 200 passengers, offering a vital alternative for daily commuters—particularly during peak hours. Designed to serve key areas including Calangute, Betim, and Porvorim, the new vessels are expected to significantly reduce private vehicle traffic over the heavily burdened Mandovi bridge.

A river navigation department official noted that the state government is exploring the idea of implementing a nominal fee for two-wheeler passengers using the service. Currently, Goa’s inland waterway system includes 30 ferries operating across 18 routes, reflecting the region’s commitment to enhancing river transport infrastructure.
