Yokohama Port is introducing a dedicated on-chassis depot to balance incoming container trailer flows and promote off-peak bookings at its terminals.
Announced by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s Kanto Regional Development Bureau, the facility will integrate with the CONPAS port information system to address truck waiting times.
The on-chassis depot will temporarily store chassis loaded with containers, enabling better management of trailer arrivals during peak hours.
Linked to CONPAS and a new booking program, it encourages drivers to schedule off-peak slots, mitigating congestion at Yokohama’s busy container terminals like Honmoku and Daikoku Piers.
This addresses social concerns over long driver waits, with the depot acting as a buffer for unbooked or delayed slots.
For Indian exporters shipping to Yokohama—a key hub for automotive, electronics, and consumer goods from Mumbai and Chennai—these enhancements promise faster drayage and reduced inland logistics delays.
Yokohama’s upgrades align with global port efficiency trends, supporting smoother transshipment on India-Japan routes amid rising bilateral trade volumes.
