The proposed Machilipatnam Port and Industrial Corridor (MPIC) recently received a shot in the arm with the AP government launching the Land Pooling Scheme (LPS) for the much touted project. This is the second biggest land pooling scheme in the state after the one implemented in Amaravati.

The LPS announced for the Machilipatnam deep water port and industrial corridor is similar to the scheme followed for the upcoming capital city.

Though the government did not mention the extent of land to be pooled for the port, it is likely that nearly 25,000 acres will be pooled in 28 revenue villages covering 424 sq km.

The government fixed various categories for returnable developed plots. The development of the scheme area will take place within three years of issue of the land pooling ownership certificate.

For patta and assigned land, the government fixed one acre as the unit to decide the extent of reconstituted plots to be given back to the owners. Patta and assigned land is divided into dry and wet categories. For wet patta land (Jareebu), the owners will get back 1,000 sq yards of residential and 450 sq yards of commercial area. In the case of dry patta land, the owners will get 1,000 sq yards of residential and 250 sq yards of commercial land.

In case of assigned wet land in the possession of ex-servicemen and political sufferers, the government will give 1,000 square yards of residential area and 450 square yards of commercial area. For dry land, 1,000 square yards of residential area and 200 square yards of commercial land will be given to the owners.

All the categories except two sub-categories in assigned land will get Rs 30,000 per acre per year as crop compensation for dry land and Rs 50,000 per acre per year for wet land for a period of 10 years. The compensation will increase by Rs 3,000 for dry land and Rs 5,000 for wet land every year.
