Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, heralded a new era in the development journey of Jharkhand when he inaugurated the second riverine multimodal terminal at Sahibganj last week. The facility was completed in record time, highlighted a report.

Built under the Jal Marg Vikas Project, at a cost of Rs 290 crore, the project has been completed in record time of 2 years. It was the Prime Minister who had laid the foundation stone for the project in 2017.

The Sahibganj terminal will play an important role in the development journey of Jharkhand and Bihar, acting as a gateway for industries in these states, and connecting them to global markets.

This is the second riverine multimodal terminal in the country.  The first, developed in Varanasi, was inaugurated in November 2018 by the Prime Minister.

The terminal will specially benefit the coal sector, stone chips, fertiliser, cement and sugar industries. Acting as a point of convergence for road-rail-river routes it will improve connectivity to Kolkata, Haldia and adjoining areas.

The terminal will be connected to the North-Eastern states via Bangladesh by the river-sea route. With a current capacity of 30 lakh tonnes per annum, it is pegged to touch 54.8 lakh tonnes per annum in the second phase, the release said.
