Summary

Cargo trade through the Benapole-Petrapole crossing will stop for eight days from 17 October as holiday closures in India and Bangladesh overlap. Operations are scheduled to resume on 25 October. Passenger travel will continue, while Benapole will retain specified cargo handling and customs services on 18 and 19 October.

Overlapping holidays create an eight-day interruption

The Benapole-Petrapole trade suspension will run from 17 to 24 October 2026, interrupting imports and exports through a major India-Bangladesh land gateway during Durga Puja.

The closure reflects different holiday schedules on either side of the border. Petrapole in India will suspend cargo trade from 17 to 21 October, while Benapole’s import-export operations will remain closed from 20 to 24 October because of holidays in Bangladesh.

Together, these periods leave an eight-day gap in normal cross-border cargo movements. Trade is scheduled to restart on the morning of 25 October.

Badruzzaman Boni, general secretary of the Benapole C&F Agents Staff Association, confirmed the arrangements on 12 October after Petrapole authorities communicated the closure in writing.

Limited cargo services will continue at Benapole

Benapole will maintain loading, unloading, cargo clearance and customs assessment on 18 and 19 October, acting port director Ruhul Amin said. Indian drivers will also be permitted to return with empty trucks after unloading.

These arrangements distinguish the suspension of cross-border trade from the handling of goods already inside the port.

Kartick Chakraborty, general secretary of the Petrapole Clearing and Forwarding Agents Welfare Association, confirmed the Indian-side closure. Any hilsa shipments sent from Bangladesh for Durga Puja would be handled through special clearance arrangements. This provision is conditional and does not constitute a general reopening of cargo trade.

Passenger movement remains open

Passport-holding passengers will continue to cross through the two ports during the cargo suspension. Benapole Immigration Police officer-in-charge Saifur Rahman said passenger services would remain normal.

Police have increased security preparations in anticipation of additional festival travel. Travellers therefore face a different operating schedule from cargo owners and transport companies.

The crossing serves passengers travelling for medical treatment, business and other purposes, alongside its commercial freight role. Keeping immigration services open preserves that movement during the holiday interruption.

A significant gateway for industrial supplies

The scale and composition of traffic explain the closure’s relevance to regional supply chains. Benapole port estimates indicate that approximately 300–350 truckloads arrive from India daily, while around 100 truckloads move in the opposite direction. Industrial raw materials are among the goods handled.

Petrapole lies approximately 80 kilometres from Kolkata. Its trade profile includes cotton and synthetic fabrics, raw cotton, steel and iron, chemicals, dyes, vehicles and cereals. Goods moving towards India include garments, jute yarn and other manufactured products.

Land Ports Authority of India figures show trade worth ₹36,633.79 crore through Petrapole in 2024–25, alongside 154,192 cargo movements. In 2023–24, trade stood at ₹30,420.92 crore, with 145,280 cargo movements.

These historical figures establish the gateway’s commercial importance. They do not measure the value of shipments affected by the forthcoming closure, which has not been quantified.

Earlier investments strengthened border facilities

The crossing has received infrastructure investment intended to improve cargo and passenger processing. In October 2024, India inaugurated a new passenger terminal and the Maitri Dwar cargo gate at Petrapole.

Maitri Dwar was developed as a second common cargo gate at the border’s zero line, following an agreement between the two countries. Its facilities include automatic number plate recognition, boom barriers, facial recognition cameras and controlled entry and exit points.

The passenger terminal brought immigration, customs and security functions together within a modern facility. These investments address the crossing’s processing infrastructure, while the forthcoming interruption arises from operating calendars on both sides of the border.

Previous holiday closure provides context

A shorter interruption occurred on 26 August 2026 for Eid-e-Miladunnabi. Trade and customs operations stopped for one day, with reopening scheduled the following morning.

Passenger movement continued during that closure, and empty Indian trucks were allowed to return after unloading. The earlier arrangements illustrate how commercial operations, internal port activity and immigration can follow separate schedules at the same crossing.

For the forthcoming eight-day period, the key operational distinction remains the availability of limited Benapole cargo services on two days while normal bilateral trade awaits the scheduled reopening.
