The Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) handled 171,875 TEUs in August 2026, capturing a 22.1% share of the total port throughput. This marks a major increase from its previous share of 13.8%, representing 68.1% growth in terminal volume.
The rapid scaling of this deep-water facility reflects a broader restructuring of market share within the Port of Colombo.
Since commencing operations, the fully automated terminal has provided critical relief for port-wide congestion. The growth at CWIT is reshaping how container volumes are allocated among older, existing operations like the Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) and state-run terminals.
Developed by a consortium led by India’s Adani Group and John Keells Holdings, the facility is on track to complete Phase 2 by late 2026, which will double its total annual capacity to 3.2 million TEUs.
