US President Donald Trump has announced that Indian conglomerate Essar Group, through its subsidiary Mesabi Metallics, will invest $18 billion to develop a steel plant in the United States. The project, to be located in Iowa, will be linked to a new iron ore mining operation in Minnesota.
Trump described the facility as the largest steel plant in American history and said it would have an annual production capacity of 10 million tonnes. The announcement was made at the White House on Monday.
Project structure and investment
The overall project comprises the Iowa steel plant and a new iron ore mine in Minnesota. The Iowa facility is expected to account for approximately $15 billion of the investment, while around $3 billion is planned for the Minnesota mining operation.
Essar said its Mesabi project has already received more than $1.8 billion in investment and is intended to supply high-grade iron ore products to the North American steel industry. Steel production is targeted to begin around 2030.
Jobs and economic impact
According to the White House, the Iowa steel plant is projected to create at least 1,750 permanent jobs. Its first construction phase could support up to 6,000 jobs.
The project is structured around an integrated supply chain connecting domestic iron ore production in Minnesota with steel manufacturing in Iowa.
Essar’s involvement in Mesabi
Essar Group’s involvement in the US steel and mining sector dates back to 2007, when it acquired Minnesota Steel LLC. Mesabi Metallics is now working to complete the mining operation and establish the associated supply chain.
Rewant Ruia, Chairman of Mesabi Metallics and a member of Essar Group’s founding family, said the project would establish a supply chain connecting an American mine with an American steel plant.
The White House announcement was also attended by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Essar Capital Director Prashant Ruia, Essar Group co-founder and Vice Chairman Ravi Ruia, and Mesabi Metallics CEO Joe Broking.
Essar’s broader steel and energy footprint
In India, Essar’s assets have included the 10-million-tonne-per-year steel facility at Hazira in Gujarat and the refinery at Vadinar. The group has also planned a low-carbon steel plant in Saudi Arabia.
The US project would expand Essar’s international steel operations while integrating mining and steel production within a North American supply chain.
