EST-Floattech has been selected by Siemens Energy to supply a battery energy storage system for Marco Polo Marine’s new Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) Plus, which is under construction at Marco Polo Marine’s shipyard in Batam, Indonesia.

Siemens Energy is acting as the system integrator for the vessel’s hybrid power plant, while EST-Floattech will provide an Octopus High Energy (HE) battery system with a capacity of more than 1 MWh. The battery system will support the vessel’s hybrid propulsion and dynamic positioning (DP) operations.

The project marks EST-Floattech’s first battery system project in Singapore and Taiwan.

CSOV designed for offshore wind and oil & gas operations

Designed by Norway-based Salt Ship Design, the CSOV Plus has been developed to serve both the offshore wind and oil and gas sectors.

The vessel features a 100-tonne active heave-compensated crane and a motion-compensated gangway designed to support walk-to-work transfers in significant wave heights of up to 3.0 metres. Its hull and propulsion configuration are also designed for station-keeping operations.

Construction of the vessel began in Batam during the second quarter of 2026, with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.

Battery system to support dynamic positioning

The Octopus HE battery system will operate alongside the vessel’s generator sets and Siemens Energy’s BlueDrive PlusC system.

During DP operations, the battery will provide spinning reserve and respond to changes in electrical load. This is expected to reduce the number of generators required to operate simultaneously while allowing the running generators to operate closer to their optimum load.

The hybrid configuration is intended to improve the vessel’s operational efficiency while providing the power response required during DP operations.

Vessel prepared for future full-electric operation

The CSOV Plus has also been designed to accommodate a significant increase in battery capacity over its operating life.

The vessel’s battery system can be expanded from the initial capacity of more than 1 MWh to a package of up to 20 MWh. This would enable the vessel to operate fully on electric power for sailing operations.

The modular architecture of the Octopus Series allows additional battery modules to be integrated with the existing battery management system. Space for the future expansion has been incorporated into the vessel’s design.

EST-Floattech said its maritime electrification experience and the suitability of the Octopus HE system for the vessel’s operating profile were key factors in Siemens Energy’s selection of the company.

CSOV Plus to support Taiwanese offshore wind projects

Following delivery, the CSOV Plus will be operated by PKR Offshore (PKRO), the Taiwan-based subsidiary of Marco Polo Marine.

PKRO will deploy the vessel for Siemens Gamesa under a multi-year framework agreement covering offshore wind projects in Taiwanese waters. The company already operates the MP Wind Archer, its first CSOV, which entered service in Taiwan in 2025.

EST-Floattech Chief Commercial Officer Walter van der Pennen said the vessel’s operating profile, including extended DP operations and frequent load changes, requires a battery system capable of supporting hybrid operations while allowing for future expansion.

“We are grateful for the trust that Siemens Energy and Marco Polo Marine have placed in us. Furthermore, we thank our partner Durapower for their role in bringing about our first project together in Singapore. Offshore wind support vessels in Asia-Pacific have demanding operating profiles: long periods on DP, constant load changes and multi-year charters. A battery system that supports those operations reliably, and that can be extended when the operator is ready to go fully electric, is exactly what the Octopus Series was designed for. We look forward to seeing the CSOV Plus at work in Taiwanese waters.”

The project brings together a hybrid power system, battery energy storage and future battery expansion capability in a vessel intended for offshore wind and oil and gas support operations in the Asia-Pacific region.
