GRSE signs MoU with DNV for advanced maritime and defence shipbuilding

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DNV (Det Norske Veritas) to collaborate on maritime and defence shipbuilding technologies.

The agreement was signed on 2 September 2026 during the SMM Hamburg Maritime Trade Fair in Germany. GRSE is a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.

The MoU combines GRSE’s expertise in warship design, shipbuilding and marine engineering with DNV’s capabilities in classification, certification, technical assurance, digitalisation, sustainability and maritime advisory services.

Key areas of collaboration

The partnership will focus on the development and application of technologies and capabilities across several areas, including:

• Advanced warships and specialised vessels
• Green shipping and sustainable technologies
• Digital shipbuilding, artificial intelligence (AI) and Industry 4.0
• Skill development, training and knowledge exchange

The collaboration is aimed at supporting GRSE’s work in digital shipbuilding, green technologies and advanced maritime engineering. It will also cover knowledge and skills development through training and technical exchange between the two organisations.

Focus on maritime and defence capabilities

The agreement comes as Indian shipbuilders increasingly focus on advanced technologies, digitalisation and sustainable shipbuilding practices. The collaboration between GRSE and DNV is intended to support the development of capabilities relevant to both defence and commercial shipbuilding.
