India has strongly condemned an attack on the commercial vessel GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman, where 11 Indian nationals were serving as crew. Ten of these Indian seafarers have been rescued, while one remains missing as search and rescue operations continue in the area.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Indian Embassy in Oman is closely tracking developments and coordinating with local authorities overseeing the maritime search effort.

MEA statement and embassy coordination

In an official statement, the MEA denounced the attack on the GFS Galaxy, describing the incident as part of a disturbing pattern of assaults on commercial shipping in the region. The ministry confirmed that the Embassy of India in Oman is in active touch with Omani authorities and is involved in efforts to locate the missing Indian crew member.

India has also expressed gratitude to Oman for its assistance and support in the ongoing rescue operations following the incident.

India urges de-escalation and protection of shipping lanes

The MEA voiced deep concern over continued attacks targeting merchant vessels and civilian infrastructure in West Asia, warning that such incidents threaten regional stability and global trade. India reiterated its call for immediate de-escalation of tensions and for diplomatic efforts to be intensified so that peace and stability can return to the region.

New Delhi stressed that commercial shipping must not be targeted and that free and unimpeded navigation through international waterways should be restored in line with international law.

Strategic importance of Strait of Hormuz

The attack on the GFS Galaxy occurred amid rising security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest maritime routes for energy shipments. Roughly a significant share of global oil trade passes through these waters, making any disruption a matter of international economic and security concern.

India’s condemnation reflects growing anxiety among trading nations and shipping stakeholders over the safety of crew, vessels and cargo transiting this critical chokepoint.

Previous incidents involving Indian seafarers

The MEA statement also comes against the backdrop of an earlier incident in which three Indians lost their lives in an attack on a merchant ship in the region. Repeated attacks have reinforced calls from India and other maritime nations for better protection of commercial vessels and stricter adherence to international norms at sea.

By highlighting both recent and past incidents, India is underscoring the urgent need to safeguard seafarers and ensure that maritime trade routes remain secure and open.
