Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major step in the country’s push toward cleaner and more sustainable rail transport. The launch adds fresh momentum to India’s efforts to modernize mobility with low-emission technology.
The train is being introduced as part of the broader shift toward greener public transport. It highlights the growing role of alternative fuel systems in the railway sector.
Route And Technology
The train will run on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, where supporting infrastructure for hydrogen refuelling has been developed. Hydrogen fuel-cell technology powers the train by generating electricity onboard, with water vapour as the only direct emission.
This development places India among the countries exploring hydrogen-based rail solutions. It also reflects a wider effort to reduce dependence on conventional diesel traction.
Railway Modernisation
The hydrogen train is expected to serve as an important test case for future clean-energy rail projects. If scaled successfully, such technology could be used on more routes over time.
The launch is also part of a larger programme of infrastructure development and transport upgrades. For Indian Railways, it signals a move toward innovation, efficiency, and lower-carbon operations.
