Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) handled 8.65 lakh TEUs of containers and 10.12 million tonnes of total cargo in October 2026. That is 27.05% and 19.08% above October 2025 respectively. Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Private Limited (BMCTPL), run by PSA Mumbai, also set a record for monthly container throughput.
October
Container traffic grew 27.05% year on year and total cargo 19.08%. Compared with September’s 834,697 TEUs, which we reported earlier from port data, October’s container volume is about 3.6% higher. Container growth of this size in one month shows how quickly volumes are building at the port.
April to October
For the first seven months of 2026-27, JNPA handled 55.26 lakh TEUs and 66.39 million tonnes of cargo. That is growth of 18.99% in containers and 14.20% in total cargo over the same period last year. October’s gain was therefore well above the seven-month trend.
PSA Mumbai record
BMCTPL, the PSA Mumbai terminal at JNPA, handled 312,179 TEUs in October, its highest monthly throughput. The previous record was 303,032 TEUs, set in August 2026. By our own calculation, the terminal handled about 36% of the port’s October container volume.
Reading the figures
The numbers cover the whole port across all terminals and cargo types. The announcement does not give the split between gateway and transshipment cargo, the share by terminal other than BMCTPL, or what drove the October jump. A single strong month can also reflect timing of vessel calls and pre-festival shipments, so the sustained trend matters more than the peak.
What next
Points to watch are whether November holds volumes near October’s level, how terminals and inland rail and road links cope with the load, and whether dwell times stay under control as throughput rises.
