The Kerala Fisheries Department has given in-principle approval for a new fishing harbour at Vizhinjam, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said on October 4.
In a post on X, Satheesan said the project would enable fishermen to dock their boats safely and facilitate the loading and unloading of fish. He described the approval as a fulfilment of the Congress-led UDF government’s commitment to fishermen.
Project features
According to the Chief Minister, the proposed harbour will include a 235-metre-long breakwater and a 500-metre-long L-shaped fishery berth.
The project will also include dredging, lighting and road connectivity. Malayalam-language reports said the facilities are intended to provide fishing boats and traditional vessels with more secure berthing and handling facilities, including greater protection during rough sea conditions.
Adani Vizhinjam Port to implement project
The project is reportedly set to be carried out by Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd (AVPPL), the concessionaire and operator of the Vizhinjam International Seaport.
The proposed fishing harbour has been described in reports as a long-standing demand of local fishermen.
