Ladakh has launched its first fresh apricot export consignment to the UAE, marking an important step for the region’s horticulture sector. The shipment of 5 metric tons was flagged off as part of a wider effort to open overseas markets for Ladakh-grown produce.
Export push for growers
The initiative is expected to improve market access for farmers and support higher income opportunities through direct exports. Officials said the program could position Ladakh as a source of premium-quality organic apricots in international markets.
The export has been enabled through an agreement involving the Ladakh administration and an overseas retail partner, with support from APEDA. The arrangement is intended to facilitate larger shipments during the current season and strengthen the region’s horticulture export pipeline.
Larger harvest season plan
Authorities said the current season’s export target is much higher than previous years, reflecting a sharp rise in commercial interest in Ladakh’s apricots. The move is also being seen as a broader push toward value addition, better logistics and stronger branding of Himalayan farm produce.
The first consignment signals growing export momentum for India’s horticulture sector, especially for high-value fruits with strong demand in overseas retail markets. It also underlines the role of organized trade partnerships in connecting remote producing regions with international buyers.
