Larsen & Toubro has proposed a ₹1,100-crore expansion at its Kattupalli shipyard and modular fabrication facility near Chennai to improve utilisation of the existing infrastructure and strengthen shipbuilding and repair capabilities. The project is aimed at scaling up the yard’s operational capacity over the next few years.
According to the report, the expansion will be carried out within the company’s existing land parcel and will require fresh environmental and coastal clearances before work can move ahead. The plan is part of L&T’s broader industrial investment push in Tamil Nadu, where the company has also committed funds for other manufacturing and infrastructure projects.
New Shops And Support Facilities
The proposed upgrade includes new fabrication and assembly shops, along with related supporting infrastructure such as paint and blasting facilities, warehouses, office space, residential buildings, a skill development centre and greenbelt development. These additions are intended to help the shipyard move closer to the capacities approved earlier for shipbuilding and ship repair activity.
The Kattupalli facility is already an important part of L&T’s maritime and offshore engineering business, and the expansion is expected to reinforce its role in India’s shipbuilding ecosystem. Industry reports indicate that the project is also expected to support job creation and industrial activity in the Chennai region.
