Mangaluru: New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has handled more than 26 million tonnes of cargo in FY2026-27 as of October 12, 2026, compared with about 24.23 million tonnes in the same period last year, a year-on-year increase of 7.68%.

How did container traffic perform?

Alongside overall cargo growth, NMPA handled 103,759 TEUs of container traffic during the period. The port said improved traffic management and coordination of cargo movements, including truck deliveries and handling activities involving JSW and other users, supported its operational efficiency.

What cargo does NMPA handle?

Located at Panambur near Mangaluru, New Mangalore Port is a major port on India’s west coast and the main maritime gateway for Karnataka. It handles crude oil and petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) products, coal, fertilisers, food commodities, iron ore, construction materials, industrial goods and containerised freight.

Its key users include MRPL, KIOCL, JSW, HPCL, IOCL and BPCL.

How does this compare with last year?

In FY2025-26, NMPA handled a record 50.04 million tonnes, its highest-ever annual throughput, coinciding with the port’s 50th financial year. That was up from 46.01 million tonnes in FY2024-25. December 2025 set a monthly record of 5.44 million tonnes.

The 26 million tonnes handled so far in FY27 already represents more than half of last year’s record total.

What are the port’s priorities?

Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairperson of NMPA, Deendayal Port Authority and the Indian Ports Association, has said the port is working to strengthen infrastructure, improve draft availability, enhance liner shipping connectivity and develop new cargo streams.

NMPA has described its latest performance as a step towards a stronger, greener and more prosperous maritime future.

Why does it matter?

Steady growth at New Mangalore reflects strong demand from Karnataka’s refining, steel and industrial base, as well as rising container volumes from the region’s exporters. With major ports nationally reporting healthy growth in the first half of FY27, sustained momentum at NMPA strengthens the case for continued investment in draft, berth capacity and hinterland connectivity to capture more direct liner services and reduce reliance on distant gateways.
