Nippon Express Group eyes India as semiconductor logistics hub, looks at Uttar Pradesh for next expansion

Japanese logistics major NX Group, formerly Nippon Express Group, is looking to expand its semiconductor logistics operations in India, with plans to develop specialised facilities near upcoming chip-manufacturing sites over the next two to three years.

The company is assessing opportunities to support India’s emerging semiconductor ecosystem through end-to-end logistics services, including international freight forwarding, customs clearance, warehousing, domestic transportation, factory delivery and the handling of high-value, sensitive chipmaking equipment. NX Group is engaging with industry participants and government stakeholders, including those associated with semiconductor projects in Dholera, Gujarat, and plans to open a dedicated semiconductor logistics centre in Gujarat in 2027.

The company is also currently evaluating locations in Uttar Pradesh, identifying sites near new semiconductor industrial parks, aligning with the broader push by the Indian government to create a domestic hub for semiconductor production. Semiconductor manufacturing requires more than standard logistics support, as moving chip fabrication equipment involves extreme precision, with machinery that is fragile, high-value and sensitive to vibration and environmental changes. Nippon Express, which has operated in India for two decades and counts Tata Electronics among its clients, is looking to upgrade its capabilities to meet these specific, high-tech requirements by setting up specialised warehouses and supply chain networks, aiming to become a key service provider for firms establishing chip fabrication plants in the country.

NX Group currently operates 103 locations and 60 warehouse facilities across 39 cities in India.

As part of this push, the government-backed India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and NX Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding during SEMICON India 2026, held in New Delhi from September 17-19, 2026, to collaborate on logistics and supply chain solutions for India’s semiconductor ecosystem. Under the agreement, the two sides will share information and hold discussions on semiconductor-related logistics requirements, logistics infrastructure and supply chain resilience, exploring ways to address logistics challenges associated with the industry and support the development of a resilient and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem in India. NX Group described India as a strategic growth hub and an important market for its long-term expansion plans.

India is expanding its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and developing a domestic ecosystem linking manufacturers, suppliers, logistics providers and global markets. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw noted earlier in September that at least 200 chip design companies have emerged under ISM 2.0, calling it a “game changer” for building home-grown semiconductor intellectual property.
