The Port of Mombasa is ramping up efforts to enhance efficiency through infrastructure expansions and modernization projects, including the rehabilitation of Berth 19B and a new dedicated yard for empty containers.

These upgrades aim to increase overall capacity and streamline cargo handling amid growing regional trade volumes. The berth rehabilitation will expand quay length by 240 meters, adding 300,000 TEUs to the port’s throughput potential.

Complementing this, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is upgrading its Terminal Operating System (TOS) and automating gates to cut dwell times and optimize movements. Recent cargo growth has underscored the need for these interventions, positioning Mombasa as East Africa’s key gateway.

KPA’s strategy aligns with broader goals to rival ports like Dar es Salaam, focusing on reduced congestion, faster turnaround, and tech integration for competitiveness in global shipping routes.
