South Western Railway (SWR) recorded its highest-ever freight loading for September, handling 4.41 million tonnes in September 2026, according to a zone press release. Freight revenue stood at Rs 465 crore, marking an 8.72% increase compared with September 2025.
Iron ore leads September freight loading
Iron ore accounted for the largest share of SWR’s freight loading at 1.7 million tonnes. Pig iron and finished steel followed with 1.127 million tonnes, while coal loading stood at 0.9 million tonnes.
Mineral oil accounted for 0.217 million tonnes and container traffic for 0.105 million tonnes during the month.
Gross revenue rises 15.91%
SWR reported gross revenue of Rs 870 crore in September, up 15.91% from the corresponding month last year.
Freight revenue contributed Rs 465 crore, an increase of 8.72%. Passenger revenue rose 26.87% to Rs 357.5 crore, while passenger traffic increased 6.83% to 1.5 crore.
Revenue from other coaching services stood at Rs 28.81 crore, up 10.51%, while parcel revenue increased 10.35% to Rs 15.89 crore.
Freight loading rises 5.8% in April-September
During April-September 2026, SWR’s cumulative originating freight loading reached 26.1 million tonnes, an increase of 5.8% over the same period last year.
Iron ore accounted for 10.17 million tonnes, followed by pig iron and finished steel at 5.95 million tonnes and coal at 5.36 million tonnes.
Gross revenue during the six-month period stood at Rs 4,730 crore, up 4.91%. Freight revenue was Rs 2,546 crore, while passenger revenue reached Rs 1,904.10 crore.
SWR carried 9.2 crore passengers during the period, representing a 4.78% increase compared with the corresponding period last year.
