Both dock systems contributed to the increase. Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) handled 29.752 MMT during the seven-month period, up 5.28% from 28.259 MMT a year earlier. Kolkata Dock System (KDS) recorded cargo throughput of 10.775 MMT, compared with 10.303 MMT, marking a growth of 4.58%.

Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairperson of SMP Kolkata, said that both dock systems contributed positively to the port’s overall performance.

Container Traffic Rises 7.98%

The port also recorded an increase in container handling, with combined throughput reaching 5,87,399 TEUs during April-October 2026, against 5,43,982 TEUs in the corresponding period of the previous year, representing a growth of 7.98%.

Explaining the factors behind the increase in container volumes, Chairperson Shri Rathendra Raman said the deployment of additional cranes by private berth operators and the port had supported vessel operations. The use of a floating crane for container handling at Diamond Harbour anchorage had also helped attract additional cargo and reduce dead freight on vessels.

Haldia Receives First Shipment of Quick Lime

In a new cargo development, Haldia Dock Complex received its first shipment of quick lime on 1 November 2026. The vessel MV ASIAN HONOR arrived from Dibba, UAE, carrying 8,133 tonnes of quick lime and hydrated lime in bags.

Quick lime is used in steel manufacturing for cleaning steel, removing impurities and forming slag. The introduction of this cargo is expected to expand the port’s industrial cargo base and support steel-related industries in eastern India.

Chairperson Shri Rathendra Raman said, “this shows the Port’s focus on better operations, better infrastructure and better service to customers. The Port is ready to achieve even higher targets in the coming years.”

The latest figures reflect growth in both bulk cargo and container traffic at SMP Kolkata, while the introduction of quick lime adds a new commodity to Haldia’s cargo profile.
