Vizhinjam International Seaport’s gateway cargo operations are moving closer to launch after NHAI submitted its safety report for the port approach road and NH 66 junction. The report outlines the infrastructure and traffic safety measures needed before export-import cargo movement can begin.
Safety measures proposed
The recommendations include streetlights along the approach road, traffic signals at the highway junction and directional signboards on both sides of NH 66. The report also calls for stronger traffic management arrangements to handle container trailers safely.
Launch timeline
Official sources quoted in the report said the government is targeting a start for EXIM cargo operations in August, subject to final approvals and completion of the required safety installations. At present, Vizhinjam mainly handles transshipment containers, and the gateway cargo phase would expand its commercial role significantly.
